Verdict

Yubo is a crowd. You swipe to match, then hang out in Lives, which are livestream video rooms where people talk and play games on camera. HMU is one conversation at a time: Meet Now pairs you with one person, gives you both the same opening prompt, and after five minutes you each privately choose Keep or Pass. If you like the energy of a busy room, Yubo is the better app, and its age verification is thorough. If you want one person’s full attention and a quick way to tell whether you click, choose HMU.

Is Yubo good for adults now?

Most articles answering this were written for worried parents, back when Yubo allowed teenagers. That has changed. Yubo raised its minimum age to 18 on 1 November 2025 and deactivated the accounts of 16- and 17-year-olds. Every user now verifies their age by taking a live selfie video in the app. If the age estimate doesn’t match the birthdate they entered, Yubo asks for an ID, which its team reviews by hand, and it deletes the image once verification is done.

So yes, it is now an adults’ app. Whether it suits you depends on whether you want to be social in a group on camera. Yubo’s own FAQ says people definitely use it for dating, though it says it is about more than that.

Room vs one-to-one: how they work

Both apps are social and in real time. The difference is how many people you talk to at once.

HMU Meet Now: two people answer the same first question with a five-minute timer, then choose whether to keep the chat
  • Finding people. Yubo: swipe right or left, and a mutual right swipe is a match; Tags show what you’re into. HMU: Discover has For You, Nearby and Recent tabs, and every profile has a question to answer.
  • Live talking. Yubo: Lives, group video rooms you can watch with your mic and camera off, then raise your hand to join. HMU: Meet Now, a five-minute one-to-one chat with a shared opening prompt.
  • Messaging. Yubo: messages, voice notes, GIFs and Reactions. HMU: every request starts with a real first message.
  • Ongoing content. Yubo: Lives and chats. HMU: posts called Moments, stories, and a new question every day.
  • Leaving. Yubo: drop out of a Live whenever you like. HMU: each person privately chooses Keep or Pass when the five minutes are up.

Pricing, checked today

Both are free to start. Yubo says its main features are free and always will be. It sells optional subscriptions and its in-app currency, Yubucks. These prices are from the US App Store and may differ elsewhere or on Android.

  • Yubo Power Pack: $13.99 a week or $18.99 a month.
  • Yubo Elite pack: $17.99 a week or $23.99 a month.
  • Yubo Infinity Pack: $27.99 a week. Turbo Pack: $5.99. Yubucks packs: $5.99 to $23.99.
  • HMU: free on iPhone and Android, with 3 Meet Now introductions a day on the free tier.
  • HMU Premium: optional. Browsing, messaging and Meet Now don’t require it.

Safety tools, side by side

Yubo publishes more safety detail than most social apps, and it’s worth giving it credit. Here is what each app offers, from the companies’ own pages.

Boundaries and safety for online friendships

  • Age checks. Yubo: a live selfie video for everyone, with an ID check when needed. HMU: adults 18+ only.
  • Moderation. Yubo: AI plus human moderators around the clock, especially in Lives and chats.
  • Filters and nudges. Yubo: SAFE Mode on by default, Muted Words, and a pop-up when you’re about to share your phone number or address.
  • Location. Yubo: a Hide My City setting.
  • Reporting. Yubo: block or report anyone, and attach up to four screenshots or recordings. HMU: report or block anyone.
  • Ending a chat. HMU: your Keep or Pass choice is private, so leaving doesn’t need an explanation.

Who should pick which

Decide by how many people you want to talk to at once, and whether you want to be on camera.

Conversation starters for meeting someone new

  • You like hanging out on camera with a group: Yubo.
  • You want to watch a room before you speak: Yubo, as a watcher with your mic and camera off.
  • You get drowned out in group chats and want one person to talk to: HMU.
  • You never know how to open: HMU. You both get the same prompt.
  • You want verified age to be part of the deal: Yubo.
  • You want to find out in five minutes whether it’s worth continuing: HMU.

Where HMU falls short

HMU has no livestreams or group rooms. If what you love about Yubo is a late-night Live with ten people playing a game, HMU won’t replace it. Yubo also gives you more ways to chat once you match, including voice notes and GIFs.

Yubo is clearer about safety than this page can be about HMU. It publishes its age-verification method, its moderation setup and its in-chat nudges. HMU is 18+, with private Keep or Pass and report and block, and it doesn’t claim more than that here. The free tier also limits Meet Now to 3 introductions a day.

How to make the first five minutes count

On either app, a live conversation goes better with a plan for the first minute. Answer the prompt or the room’s topic with something specific (‘Best thing I ate this week was a $4 taco on Fifth’), then ask a question that’s easy to answer. If it clicks, say what you’re looking for before the timer runs out or the Live breaks up: ‘I’m mostly looking for people to go to shows with. You?’
