The short verdict
Tinder is a dedicated dating app built for browsing: you swipe through a lot of profiles, match when you both like each other, and talk later, if anyone writes first. HMU is built for the talking part. Its Meet Now feature gives you one person, one shared opening prompt and five minutes, and the chat continues only if you both choose Keep. HMU isn’t a dedicated dating app. People use it for friendship, dating or both. If you want the widest choice of dating profiles, verification badges and paid tools to get seen, stay on Tinder. If your matches pile up and nobody says anything, HMU is the better second app to try.
How a match happens on each
On Tinder, you Like or Nope profiles that show photos, interests and answers to profile prompts. You can match with people nearby or farther away. Chat is free, but only once you have both shown interest. Seeing who already liked you requires Tinder Gold or Platinum.
On HMU, you can browse Discover, with For You, Nearby and Recent tabs, but the core is Meet Now. You join when you are free to talk, HMU pairs you with one compatible person, and you both see the same opening prompt with a five-minute timer. Afterward, each of you privately chooses Keep or Pass.

- Tinder, step 1: swipe through profiles. HMU, step 1: join Meet Now when you have five minutes free.
- Tinder, step 2: wait for a mutual Like. HMU, step 2: get paired with one person and see the same prompt.
- Tinder, step 3: someone sends the first message, or nobody does. HMU, step 3: you are already talking. The timer runs for five minutes.
- Tinder, step 4: the chat continues at whatever pace you both keep. HMU, step 4: each person privately picks Keep or Pass, and you carry on only if both pick Keep.
The first conversation
The biggest practical difference is who has to write the opener. On Tinder, a match is a door. Someone still has to walk through it with a first line, and a profile prompt is the best material you have. On HMU, the opener is given to you both, so the first minute is spent answering instead of drafting.
Outside Meet Now, HMU requests also start with a real first message, and every profile has a question to answer, with a new question every day. There is no ‘hey’ sitting in your inbox with no context.
Conversation starters for meeting someone new
- Tinder opener that works: pick one prompt answer and ask about it. ‘You said the best taco is in your neighborhood. Which one, and what do I order?’
- HMU Meet Now: answer the shared prompt honestly, then ask the same question back. Five minutes goes quickly when nobody has to invent the topic.
- Either app: by the end of a good chat, name a plan. ‘Coffee Saturday morning, near the park?’
What each one costs
Both apps are free to download. Tinder has three optional tiers. Tinder Plus gives unlimited Likes and Rewinds, Passport to chat with people in a place you choose, no ads, and Incognito. Tinder Gold adds See Who Likes You, weekly Super Likes and a Boost a month. Tinder Platinum adds Prioritized Likes, which put your Likes in front of a potential match before non-subscribers’ Likes.
Prices aren’t one number. Today’s US App Store listing shows Tinder Plus at $9.99 and Tinder Gold at four prices from $13.99 to $24.99, and it doesn’t say which plan length each covers. Tinder’s own terms say pricing varies based on a number of factors, and promotional rates vary by region, plan length and account activity. Check the price shown to you in the app before you subscribe.
HMU is free on iPhone and Android, and the free tier includes 3 Meet Now introductions a day. HMU Premium is optional.
Safety tools, side by side
Tinder has the larger toolkit. Photo Verification compares a video selfie with your profile photos and adds a blue check mark, though Tinder says the badge isn’t a guarantee. ID + Photo Verification exists but only in select test markets. Block Contacts keeps people in your phone’s contacts from seeing you, as far as Tinder can match them. You can report from any profile or chat. In the US, Tinder connects to Noonlight, which lets you share date details and discreetly contact emergency services.
HMU keeps it simpler. You can pass, report or block anyone, and your Keep or Pass choice in Meet Now stays private, so nobody knows you passed. HMU doesn’t list verification badges or an emergency partner. On either app, the basics still apply: meet in a public place, tell a friend where you’ll be, and keep money and your address out of early chats.
Who should pick which
Pick Tinder if you are looking only for dating and want to browse a lot of profiles at your own pace, if you want photo verification badges, if you travel and want Passport, or if you like the idea of Double Date with a friend, which Tinder is testing for free in select markets. Tinder also tests a timed video format, Speed Date, in select markets: three-minute video sessions that continue only if both people opt in. If that is available where you live and you like video, it is close to what HMU does.
Pick HMU if you would rather talk than browse, if your Tinder matches rarely turn into conversations, or if you are open to friendship as well as dating. Plenty of people keep both: Tinder for browsing, HMU for an evening when you want to actually talk to someone.
Where HMU falls short
HMU isn’t a dedicated dating app. Some people you meet want friendship, some want to date, some want both, so say what you are looking for early. Meet Now also asks something of you: you have to be free to talk for five minutes, live, with someone new. On a busy afternoon, Tinder’s reply-whenever pace is easier.
Tinder has more safety features to point to, including verification badges, Block Contacts and Noonlight in the US. And because Meet Now gives you one person at a time, you can’t compare dozens of profiles before deciding who to talk to. For some people that is the point. For others it is the reason to stay on Tinder.
If you try HMU this week
Fill in your profile question with something specific enough to reply to. ‘Best $5 I spent this month’ gets better answers than ‘ask me anything’. Then use your three free Meet Now introductions on an evening when you actually have time. Answer the shared prompt properly, ask one follow-up, and choose Keep only if you would happily talk to that person again tomorrow.
If you Keep each other, move toward a plan within a day or two. Chats that drift for a week fade on every app.
